Chicago-based developer CEDARst will appear before the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission next week with plans to build a mixed-use building at the scene of a deadly 1934 clash between Minneapolis Police and truckers. striking.

At its July 27 meeting, the Heritage Preservation Commission will consider a “certificate of suitability” to enable the new building, which would house commercial space on the first floor, 32 apartments and a parking lot.

City staff recommend approval of the Certificate of Suitability with conditions that include salvage and replacement of excavated historic pavers for utility connections, installation of matching materials where historic pavers cannot be salvaged and Moreover.

“The proposal will introduce a 21st century building into the historic district, which will affect the integrity of the district’s setting, but not in a negative way,” notes the staff report. “The site has historically included a variety of low-intensity, storage-free uses, including a residence, restaurant and, currently, above ground parking. “

Sarah McKenzie, the city’s media relations coordinator, said the Minneapolis Planning Commission will review the project after the CHP review.

The CEDARst project team includes the BKV Group design office and the historic consulting firm Hess, Roise and Co.

The project is part of plans previously announced by CEDARst for the former CJ Duffy Paper Co. block in the warehouse district of Minneapolis.

With a mix of new construction and renovations, the developer plans to bring more than 500 multi-family units and other amenities to the Duffy Block, which is framed by Washington Avenue, Fifth and Sixth Avenues, and the TownePlace Suites by Marriott hotel.

Construction will take place concurrently with CEDAR’s “historic rehabilitation” of adjacent buildings George R. Newell (300 Sixth Ave. N.) and Hall Hardware Co. (608 N. Third St.), the staff report noted. .
