The company announced targets that were endorsed by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, a partnership of organizations – including the United Nations Global Compact – that certifies that companies have set emission reduction targets aligned with the latest climate science. Cushman & Wakefield has been at the forefront of collecting and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data for years. This statement became a regulatory requirement when Cushman & Wakefield went public in 2018, although the company has been calculating and voluntarily reporting its GHG emissions since 2015.

As part of its broader global commitment to achieve net zero, Cushman & Wakefield has committed to reducing market-based scopes 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% – which include direct emissions and those purchased from from heat and electricity, respectively – by 2030 from a base year 2019.

In addition to reductions in its corporate operations, another target relates to Cushman & Wakefield’s scope 3 emissions – the indirect emissions of its value chain, including business travel, employee travel and facilities that ‘she manages on behalf of her clients.

“In order to define these targets, we screened all relevant emission source categories,” Friedlich said. “These are direct emissions, those purchased from utilities, then up and down the supply chain. Our downstream supply chain includes our property and facilities management services – the buildings and customer facilities that we manage and over which we have operational influence. We have found that this category of emissions represents over 99% of our total emissions.

As such, Cushman & Wakefield will engage with key facility / property management clients to encourage them to set their own science goals by 2025.
