Houston’s women’s basketball performance in their exhibition game against Texas A & M-Commerce showed the first signs of a promising season, beating the Lions 91-64 Friday evening at the Fertitta Center.

The Cougars had an impressive offensive showcase in this game. UH shot 54 percent from the field, leading to 91 points. The Cougars have also shown they have the ability to share the ball, racking up 19 assists overnight.

The offense isn’t the only thing that has contributed to the Cougars’ success on the court. UH commanded the boards, getting 47 rebounds against the Lions’ 40 rebounds.

UH also played strong defense, forcing 21 turnovers.

Senior striker Tatyana Hill has shown she wants to end her senior year strong and has been a key contributor. Hill scored 20 points in just 15 minutes with a near-perfect shooting performance, making 9 out of 10 shots.

The only weakness that was present on the field today for the Cougars was their free throw. UH shot less than 50 percent from the line, making just 4 of 14 shots, while the Lions shot an exceptional 85 percent.

Ultimately, the Cougars were able to quash their struggles on the line, thanks to solid play in almost every other aspect of the game.

The Cougars open the regular season Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Fertitta Center where they will face Howard.
